Liepāja Museum is located in an outstanding 20th Century eclectic architecture building. The Liepāja Museum has been granted a status of the National state protected cultural monument and is situated in the territory of the urban monument of National significance “Liepāja City Historical Center” and is a part of it. The collection of the Liepāja Museum boasts almost 130’000 museum pieces. The Liepāja Museum has two branches – “Liepāja Under Occupation Regimes” (currently under reconstruction) and the 17th -19th Century Interior Museum, which is planned to be opened to visitors in early 2022. Liepāja Museum is a member of the Latvian Museum Association and the International Council of Museums (ICOM).
PERMANENT DISPLAYS
The Liepāja Museum offers extensive permanent displays covering a wide period of time. The display of the Ancient history of Liepāja region – from the Stone Age (8500 – 1500 BC) to the Late Iron Age (800 – 1200 BC) provides an overview of the ancient historical eras; it allows to be acquainted with the most important archeological monuments of Liepāja region and to see unique antiquities. The exposition further reveals the features of Liepāja in the Middle Ages, reflecting six centuries of history, telling about the period from the 13th to the 18th Century, from creation of the Līva village to the establishment of an important port and trade city of the Duchy of Courland, annexed to the Russian Empire in 1795. Further, the original items, pieces of art, photographs and documents tells about Liepāja in the 19th Century and its transformations.
A separate exposition in the basement level of the Museum dedicated to the 19th century ethnography of everyday life in South Courland (Dienvidkurzeme) introduces to the traditions of wearing folk costumes. It also reveals the history of the legendary pottery of Rucava in an interactive way. The exposition of South Courland reflects the mentality, color palette used and sense of beauty of its people.
The interactive exhibition “Six Months of the Provisional Government of Latvia in Liepāja” dedicated to the centenary of the Latvian state tells about the significance of Liepāja at the beginning of the Latvian state.
