The mediaeval ruin of Limbaži Castle is a site of major historical significance on account of once being a residence of the Archbishop of Rīga. Its gate tower is unique to Latvia by virtue of having retained fragments of an exceptional retractable latticed grille that used to dominate its portcullis. During the summer season, visitors can also enjoy fantastic views of the town of Limbaži from the sightseeing tower built next to the ruin.
